How should one prepare for the science and technology portion of the UPSC exam?

Lately, the nature of questions from science and technology in Civil services has changed a lot, especially since 2013. They rarely ask bookish facts or theories. You should be preparing more enthusiastically, this subject may not let you feel less.

these topics can be considered for UPSC-

Space science
Biotechnology
Nanotechnology
Robotics
ICT
Clearly they are focusing on applied sciences rather than theoretical parts. Thus NCERTs or basic science books are maybe not necessary and definitely not sufficient.

Here is how you can go about it-

Be aware of the latest technological developments. Keep the special focus on those technical developments which can Impact India in a big way, positively or negatively. A positive development for example, a more efficient way to generate and store energy, a new cure for cancer, a possible cure for HIV, or a new potentially useful nanomaterial. Similarly, negative development is, a new disease, rising AMR(antimicrobial resistance)
Keep a tab on the works of Government organizations such as ISRO, DST, ICAR, CSIR, etc. A hot area of research they are undertaking. Any new hot project that has been commenced. All this should be tracked and understood.
Some global developments of international importance. Works of NASA, CERN, etc. Developments on experimental physics, Genomics,. All these should also be tracked.
Sources to prepare-

Any updated coaching S&T booklet/notes which can build the basic foundation for you? Non-science graduates can read the NCERTs additionally, but only if you feel the need because NCERTs have a lot of things that are not relevant for UPSC these days at all.
Reading the S & T development from the newspaper regularly.
Read any coaching magazine on S&T.

If you don’t understand a term or a process while reading, search it on google. If you still have problem understanding watch videos on YouTube. For example, quantum tunneling can be a tough concept to understand, and watching a video gives clarity more effectively than reading about it. Similarly, you will understand a spacecraft or rocket more if you can visualize it.

The basic idea I am trying to tell you is that don’t dwell on learning the basic science stuff unnecessarily. Learn those concepts only which help you understand applied sciences. So concepts should be learned on need bases, not in advance.
