Is English grammar important for UPSC?

In competitive exams, the English language incorporates three important sections: grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. These three sections enable the exam-conducting committees to examine the proficiency of aspirants/ applicants in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and understanding the English language.

Thence, candidates have to acquire adequate knowledge by adopting systematic strategies of learning the language to achieve their dream by qualifying these competitive examinations.

In particular, aspirants must put their sincere and continuous efforts in practicing Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Grammar Usage.

n the competitive exams, English Language paper aims at assessing the language skills of the candidates to examine the aspirants’ mental alertness, presence of mind, critical analysis as well as the judgement.

In many domains of work, a variety of vocabulary is required to completely express some of the ideas succinctly and effectively. A large vocabulary correlates well with the capability to handle complex ideas. This is the reason, why the English Language holds significance in competitive exams.

The Civil Service Exam, which is widely known as UPSC Examination is the most renowned nationwide competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruiting various Civil Services of the Government of India such as Indian Administrative Services, Indian Foreign Services etc. The UPSC Exam consists of three phases:

Preliminary Examination
Mains Examination and
Personal Interview


The Preliminary Examination has two objective papers, where each paper consists of 200 marks:

GS Paper I: The General Studies paper consists of 100 question of 2 marks each. This paper aims to check your knowledge on Current Affairs, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Geography, Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology, History, International Relations.

GS Paper II/ CSAT: CSAT as the title indicates aims to infer the aptitude of Candidates by testing Reasoning ability, analytical and interpersonal skills. CSAT Paper consists of 80 questions; each question carries 2.5 marks.

The CSAT paper includes broad categories, they are:
Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation, Reasoning and Analytical Skills, Mental Ability/ Basic Numeracy. Usually the English part of CSAT consists of 20-30 questions.

How to improve English for UPSC exam?

For topping in UPSC Exams even average English skill is sufficient. You are not required to know perfect grammar or British English.

In the modern competitive era, the English language plays a vital role in way of our daily life. As a part of the tri-language formula, English plays multiple roles; as an international language, a link language, a library language, a language for communication, and so on. Usage of English at an advanced level requires considerable proficiency in that language.

So many Multinational companies expect their prospective employees to have a level of English knowledge. But the importance of English is not just limited to the corporate sector. Nowadays English language proficiency plays a vital role in competitive exams such UPSC and State Services Exams.

The English language is considered as a mandatory section in the syllabus, in almost all competitive exams at all levels including the national and state levels.


If your english language is poor here are some steps to develop it.

Start reading News Paper(English), though you are not required to do so because you will not understand anything initially.  even if you do not understand it fully try to read it .
Start learning 5 new words every day and try to use them in sentences (you can take help of your past incident to connect those sentences)
Keep a simple dictionary to know the exact meaning of the words you are learning.
Read the book ‘Word power made easy’ by Norman Lewis. This book is important because the author traces the root of most of the words.
Listen to AIR India in English every day.
Practise writing two pages every day in English.
Pick up the habit of reading. Begin reading 2–3 pages every day before going to bed. Buy the book of your liking.


Minimum Educational Qualifications for UPSC Civil Services Exam | IAS Exam Eligibility


Any degree (graduation). From:

any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.
 or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament.
 or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
 or possess an equivalent qualification.
Note: Final-year students can also apply.


Minimum age to appear for UPSC IAS Exam | IAS Exam Eligibility

The minimum age to appear for IAS Exam is 21 years. This means that the candidate must have at least 21 years of age on 1st August of that given year when the exam is held. For example, if the candidate is appearing for 2023 prelims, he/she should be above 21 years of age by Aug 1, 2023.

The upper age limit is also calculated on the date Aug 1. This means if the candidate is appearing for 2023 prelims, he/she should be below the mentioned maximum limit by Aug 1, 2023. The upper age limit is fixed differently for different categories, which is as given below.

Upper age limit for the General category: 32 years.
Upper age limit for OBC: 35 years.
Upper age limit for SC/ST: 37 Years.
Upper age limit for Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: 35 years.
Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years of Military Service: 37 years.
Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons (general category): 42 years.
Apart from the mentioned limits, OBC/ SC/ ST candidates will get the benefit of cumulative age relaxation. This means age relaxations get added in special cases, say, for example, if the person is OBC + Ex-servicemen, he will get an extension of 3 + 5 = 8 years, ie his upper age limit now stands at 40 years.

How many attempts are allowed for UPSC Civil Services Exam?

A general category candidate has an age limit of 32 years, but that doesn’t mean that he can write this exam as many times as he wishes. There are some restrictions on the number of times this exam can be taken, which again is different for different categories.

The number of attempts for the IAS exam: General Category: 6 attempts till 32 years of age.
The number of attempts for the IAS exam: OBC: 9 attempts till 35 years of age.
The number of attempts for the IAS exam: SC/ST: unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.
NB: Physically Handicapped /disabled candidates belonging to the General category will get the benefit of 9 attempts till the age prescribed by UPSC – 42 years.
