UPSC : He clears UPSC exam despite not having any guidance and financial strength

Kerala: Daily wage earner’s son bags 432nd rank in UPSC exam

Without an internet connection at this rented house, any mentor to guide him or any coaching class to take tips from, Menon has bagged in his third attempt the 432nd rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam, results of which was announced Saturday.

To help his family and pursue his studies, Menon had to take the  tuition classes for high school students.

UPSC: The story of Satish V Menon can act as an inspiration for the aspirants preparing for the Civil Services. He had proved the phrase very well, 'where there is a will there is a way'. Menon was 26 when he secured 432nd rank in his third attempt without any coaching or internet connectivity.

Menon's father was a daily wage laborer and his mother was a housewife. To support his family and his studies, Menon had to pay tuition to high school students. He achieved this all on his own without any internet connection, any mentor for guidance, or taking tips from any coaching class. A native of Udayamperur village in Kerala's Ernakulam district, Menon wanted to pursue engineering after class 12. However, due to financial constraints, he did his graduation and post-graduation in physics.

During an interview in 2015, he had said that lack of internet connectivity was a major problem for him. He relied on cybercafes. Menon had also said that the daily supply of English dailies or magazines was not accessible to him. To get the books he needed for his preparation, he had to visit a public library in Ernakulam once a week.

Menon was also selected for three clerk posts under the Kerala state government. However, his family inspired him to prepare for UPSC instead of settling for clerk posts. He aimed to join the Indian Foreign Service with a rank of 432.
