IFS officer discusses strategy for writing essays for UPSC

The essay writing section of the UPSC civil services exam carries a maximum of 250 marks and is considered one of the most important sections of the examination.

In this exam, candidates must write essays on different topics. Candidates who have passed the preliminary exam can sit for the main exam.

"They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression," the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) says.

Officer Ankit Kumar of the Indian Forest Service (IFS), who has previously provided tips and suggestions on how to prepare for UPSC exams, has provided a detailed breakdown of how to write an essay for the Civil Services exam.

He is an AGMUT cadre officer from the 2019 batch. He mostly tweets on Forest Conservation, Wildlife Protection, and Climate Change.

He begins by explaining that an essay consists of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Aspirants should sketch a rough outline of an essay before writing it, he says. "Have a fair glance at the blueprint and replicate the points on main essay," he says.
